Review of transport sector in Azerbaijan (January-November 2017)

Some 206.2 million tons of cargo were carried by Azerbaijani modes of transport in January-November 2017 or by 1.8 percent more than in January-November 2016, the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee said in a report.

According to the report, the volume of non-oil cargo increased by 3.5 percent and reached 156.6 million tons for the year.

Some 81.6 percent of the total volume of goods transported accounted for the private sector during the reporting period.

Some 64.1 percent of all cargo were transported by vehicles, 25.9 percent - by pipelines, 6.3 percent - by railway, 3.6 percent - by ships, 0.1 percent - planes.

Some 1.79 billion people were transported in January-November 2017, which is by 2.3 percent more than in January-November 2016. Most of the passengers were transported by vehicles (88.1 percent), metro (11.6 percent) and the rest part - other modes of transport.

Some 13 million tons of cargo were transported by railway in January-November 2017 or by 7.1 percent less than in January-November 2016.

On average per day, the number of loaded carriages made up 348 and unloaded - 419.

Average daily load of carriages in the northern direction is 13,300 tons, in western direction - 5,200 tons and in southern direction - 800 tons.

Some 7.47 million tons of cargo were transported by ships in January-November 2017 or by 44.6 percent more than in January-November 2016. Some 48.6 percent of the transported goods accounted for oil cargo. The volume of goods handled in Azerbaijani ports amounted to 9.59 million tons in January-November 2017.

Some 132.1 million tons of cargo were transported by vehicles in January-November 2017, which is by 2.1 percent more than in January-November 2016.

Some 1.57 billion people were transported by vehicles in January-November 2017, which is by 1.8 percent more compared to January-November 2016. Some 96 percent of the passengers were transported by buses and 4 percent - by cars.

Some 207.6 million people were transported by metro increasing by 5.3 percent in January-November 2017 compared to January-November 2016.

Some 2.18 million passengers were transported by air transport in January-November 2017 which is by 18.9 percent more than in January-November 2016. Some 0.1 percent of shipment by this kind of transport accounted for the private sector.

In January-November 2017, 30.86 million tons of oil was transported via the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline compared to 30.94 million tons in the same period of 2016, Azerbaijan's State Statistical Committee said in a report.

"In January-November 2017, 78.9 percent of oil transported via the country's main pipelines accounted for the BTC pipeline," reads the report.

Some 5.88 million tons of transit oil (from Turkmenistan) were transported via the BTC in January-November 2017 compared to 4.1 million tons in the same period of 2016.

In January-November 2017, the South Caucasus Pipeline (Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum) transported 6.63 billion cubic meters of gas compared to 6.65 billion cubic meters of gas in the same period of 2016, according to the State Statistics Committee of Azerbaijan.

As of October 2017, as part of expansion of the South Caucasus Pipeline, which is a part of the Shah Deniz Stage 2, mainline construction continued in Azerbaijan with approximately 419 km of pipe welded and 380 km of backfill complete. All five of the planned horizontal directional drilling activities have also been completed.

In Georgia, mainline construction is complete. Mainline commissioning is approximately 90 percent done.

Hydro-testing of the pipeline is ongoing in both Azerbaijan and Georgia. Six hydro-test sections have been completed on the pipeline in Azerbaijan and 11 hydro-test sections have been completed in Georgia.

Compressor Station 1 construction in Georgia is 100 percent complete with commissioning works approximately 67 percent done. In Compressor Station 2 in Georgia, construction works are approximately 82 percent complete. In the metering station, construction works are 100 percent complete, commissioning works are approximately 87 percent done and the facility is on track to achieve the readiness for introduction of hydrocarbons milestone this year.

Overall, 98 percent of the construction and commissioning scope is already completed.
