Azerbaijan, Turkey and Pakistan are taking important steps to ensure stability in the region, Chair Holder of UNESCO Cultural Diplomacy, Governance and Education, Director of Diplomatic and Strategic Studies Center in Paris Naciye Selin Senocak told Trend Nov. 30.

Senocak was commenting on the trilateral meeting of the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan, Turkey and Pakistan held in Baku Nov. 30.

The expert said that this meeting is also important for the development of defense industry and military cooperation.

Senocak said that the partnership of Azerbaijan, Turkey and Pakistan is an important breakthrough and will contribute to the development of a joint defense strategy.

"Pakistan is the biggest Muslim country in the world after Indonesia and the only Muslim country that possesses nuclear weapons," Senocak said.

The expert also added that Turkey and Pakistan have always supported Azerbaijan in the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and this support will further strengthen.

"Turkey and Pakistan have always rendered diplomatic support to Azerbaijan in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement and joint efforts to resolve this problem will enhance the strategic importance of this cooperation," she said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
