EU doors are open to Georgia

Doors to the EU are open for Georgia, but it does not mean that it can readily join it, chairman of the Georgian Parliament David Usupashvili said.

He was commenting on German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier's statement that nobody knows what will happen in 10, 15 or 20 years after the signing of the association agreement.

"It took several years for Poland, the Czech Republic and the Baltic countries to join the EU," he added.

"The European Parliament clearly stated a few days ago that Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine have a European perspective," he added. "This means that the 49th article of the EU constitution can be applied to Georgia. This also means that the EU is open to Georgia. But this does not mean that we can join it tomorrow. Poland, the Czech Republic, the Baltic countries have been working for a long time to become EU members.
