Leader of the rallies in Armenia, opposition MP Nikol Pashinyan became the only candidate for the post of prime minister in Armenia, the press-service of the Armenian parliament said, Russia’s RIA Novosti agency reported.

"Yelk faction of the National Assembly nominated Pashinyan for the post of prime minister in Armenia in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution," said a message posted on the website of the parliament. “There are no other candidates.”

The deadline for the nomination of candidates expired at 17:00 (GMT+3).

Pashinyan needs 53 out of 105 votes. Thus, not only Yelk, Tsarukyan and Dashnaktsutyun factions, but also some members of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia must vote for Pashinyan.

The Armenian parliament will consider the issue of electing the prime minister on May 1.

Armenia’s ex-president Serzh Sargsyan has been elected as prime minister with 77 votes for and 17 against.

The rally, headed by opposition MP Nikol Pashinyan, has been held in Yerevan since April 13. The opposition accused Sargsyan of poor governance and deteriorating economic situation in the country. Sargsyan resigned on April 23 amid protests.
