( Earthtimes ) - Berlin authorities are holding a former Georgian defence minister, Irakli Okruashvili, who is wanted in his home country on corruption and abuse of power charges, prosecutors in the German capital said Wednesday. An application under the terms of a European extradition agreement was being examined, and the Georgian authorities were expected to provide evidence, official said.
The decision depends on rulings from a Berlin court and subsequently the Justice Ministry.
Okruashvili was arrested in Georgia in September on charges of corruption, money laundering and abuse of power before being released on bail and fleeing to Germany.
He had previously accused President Mikhail Saakashvili of serious crimes, including human rights abuses.
