Georgia, Tbilisi / Тrend corr N. Kirtskhalia / The Georgian President-in-Office Nino Burjanadze de-facto cautions the Abkhazian authorities against applying any punitive force in the Gal region against local residents. "Our supporters in the Gal region held an action in support to the presidential candidate Mikhail Saakashvili but there were attempts to impede them," she said.

Burjanadze stressed that the members of the action were threatened to be punished.

"Any corporal punishment will be adequately reacted by our side. We do not intend to yield to provocations, but that does not mean that we will not response the same way in case the Georgians in the Gal region undergo some punishment, as that region is also a part of Georgia," she said.

Burjanadze welcomed the actions in support to Saakashvili and said that it was a free expression of people's will. She charged the Interior Ministry with holding a monitoring of the corporal punishment which may be applied by the separatists to the civil inhabitants of the Gal region.
