Leaders of Armenian Separatist Movement under Trial in Georgia

Georgia, Tbilisi, 10 November / corr Trend N.Kirtzkhalia / Hearings have been launched over the case of activists of separatist Youth Union of Javakh in Akhaltsikh, (Samtskhe-Javakheti region). Two cases are under trial simultaneously, one over Gurgen Shirinyan and his relatives and the second over Vaaqn and Armen Chakhalyan and his family.

Representatives of nationalistic movement of Armenians of Samtskhe-Javakhetiya were accused of illicit storage of weapons and murder. Chakhalyan and members of his family were detained for illicit storage of weapon and Shirinyan, who is absconding at present, is accused of murder of a local police man.

Armen Chakhalyan's health continues to worsen as a result of diseases, which he got in custody, Armen Chakhalyan's relatives said. Vaqqn Chakhalyan, leader of movement, stated this process to have a political nature and considers himself a political prisoner.

Vaqqn Chakhalyan faces a prospect of eight-year imprisonment.

Lawyers have already been sent from Armenia to defend Chakhalyan's interests. Lawyers from France and Austria will arrive to help him shortly.
