The U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged American investors to take a closer look at Georgia ahead of the inaugural meeting of the Georgian-U.S Commission under the Charter on Strategic Cooperation at a joint press conference with Georgian Prime Minister Nikoloz Gilauri in Washington.

"We call on U.S. investors to take a better look at the Georgia as it becomes a model of economic development in the region," Clinton said.

Gilauri thanked Clinton for supporting the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Georgia, as well as for financial and economic assistance provided to his country.

"The last two years were very difficult for Georgia, and we really needed assistance from the EU and U.S., and now there is a recovery. This U.S. assistance has allowed us to become a leader in logistics in the region. Georgia has become a regional model for successful development, we have shown how to combat corruption, and have a free and market economy," he said.

Gilauri said at this stage of development Georgia needs assistance in education, economics and security. "We have several projects for the development of transit facilities in the country, and this refers not only oil, gas, but also electricity. We intend to open a technical university, which will focus on advanced technology," he said.

However, Gilauri added that the most important task is to ensure security, and in this regard, Georgia's ties with NATO are very important. "We are making our contribution to global security by participating in operations in Afghanistan, and we thank the U.S. for unequivocal support for the integration into NATO and strengthening of our security," he said.

He also expressed the hope that this support will be provided to Georgia also at the Lisbon Summit of NATO.
