The number of prisoners is growing every year in Georgia, the Georgian Ombudsman said in her report for 2010. According to the report, international studies show that Georgia hold one of the top spots globally in terms of the number of prisoners.

The number of prisoners is growing every year in Georgia, the Georgian
Ombudsman said in her report for 2010. According to the report, international studies show that Georgia hold one of the top spots globally in terms of the number of prisoners.

According to statistics, there are 538 prisoners for every 100,000 citizens, which is the second-highest figure in Europe after Russia and the sixth worldwide among 216 countries.

Some 23,864 prisoners were serving sentences in Georgia as of Dec. 31. According to the Council of Europe, Georgia ranks first in Europe in terms of prisoners per capita.
