The speaker of the committee on migration of the CE Parliamentary Assembly Tina Acketoft examines the humanitarian situation in the Gali district of Abkhazia. She said that the humanitarian situation in the Gali district reached its limit. She made this statement after the four-day visit to Tbilisi, Sukhumi and Gali.
According to the PACE website, her main purpose was to gather facts for the report "Humanitarian situation after the Georgian-Abkhazian war: humanitarian situation in areas suffered after war".
"Regarding good news, the situation in terms of safety improved," she said. "There are only a few cases along the administrative border. The streets are safe. The effective steps were made to remove racket, bribery and corruption in the Gali district. This fact is encouraging, though there are still a lot of things to do."
She said that there is a problem with children's education, especially for ethnic Georgians.
"Children must get education at their native language, whether it is Georgian, Abkhaz, Russian," she said.
She pointed to the prospect of increasing the number of checkpoints on the administrative border.
"These checkpoints play an important role in improving of the people's daily life in the region," she said.
Military actions were launched in the Georgian territory, South Ossetia on Aug.8 in 2008. Later the Russian troops occupied the Tskhinvali city and drove the Georgian military back. Russia recognized the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in late August. In response, Tbilisi broke off diplomatic relations with Moscow and announced two unrecognized republics as the occupied territories.
