The Russian delegation to PACE announced the impossibility of solving the problems existing between Georgia and Russia around the occupied territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. This statement was made by head of the Russian delegation Alexei Pushkov after a meeting with the head of the Georgian delegation in the office of the President of the PACE in Strasbourg.

He stressed that the problems "do indeed exist, but they can not solve these problems."
In turn, the head of the Georgian delegation Petre Tsiskarishvili said that even if the question of passage of the EU observers to the occupied territories can not be solved at the level of European MPs, then the meeting with the Russian delegation is meaningless.

"We are seeking all means to speak not only with our partners in the EU, but also with Russia, about how and when it plans to implement the resolutions of the European Union. As it turned out, the Russian delegation, even though they are aware of the problem, not have sufficient resources, and they just said the Duma is not a body that can solve the problems " he said.

The talks between the Georgian and Russian sides have been initiated by PACE President Jean-Claude Mignon.

The sides discussed issues of refugee return, the abolition of the recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, and the implementation of the peace agreement of the six points of the August 8, 2008. However, the Russian delegation said that these issues are not within its competence.

Military actions were launched in the Georgian region of South Ossetia on Aug.8, 2008. Later Russian troops occupied the city of Tskhinvali and drove the Georgian military back. Russia recognised the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in late August.
In response, Tbilisi broke off diplomatic relations with Moscow and announced the two unrecognised republics as occupied territories.
