An interagency U.S. delegation led by Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Thomas Melia arrived this morning in Georgia.

The visit aims to get acquainted with the pre-election situation in Georgia where on October 1 parliamentary elections will be held, Melia told reporters at Tbilisi airport.

The delegation includes representatives of the Agency for International Development, the Department of Defense and Department of Justice.

Melia noted that the visit of the delegation stresses the importance of the democratic election process, as a result of which the Georgian people should elect parliament expressing their will.

Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and members of the delegation will hold a series of meetings with the opposition parties, NGOs and the authorities.

"During the meetings, the delegation will call on the Government of Georgia to abide by all the rules of electoral law impartially and transparently, and will urge the political parties to engage actively in this process and to comply with the law," Melia stressed.
