President of Georgia Mikheil Saakashvili and Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán opened the new airport named after David Agmashenebeli on Sept.27 in Kutaisi.

Georgian President stressed that the airport was constructed by Hungarian specialists, whoinstalled the roof of the airport building. "It is one of the most complex constructions, and Hungarian specialists adequately coped with this," he said.

Saakashvili said that the Kutaisi Airport is the air gateway for West Georgia and it will be one of the most inexpensive airports. He stressed that negotiations are underway so that Kutaisi Airport became a hub for return traffic from Europe to Asia.

Saakashvili said that as from next year, a visa free system with Europe will be introduced and it is important that the flights were affordable to citizens.

"The flight from Tbilisi to Kiev costs $600, from here $100. That is the difference and an indication that there is no monopoly," he said stressing that in addition to Kiev it will be possible to carry out flights from Kutaisi to Minsk, Tel Aviv and other world cities.

The airport handled its first aircraft from the European budget airline Wizz Air. The company carried out the Kiev-Kutaisi flight. Georgian Economy Minister Vera Kobalia was also on the board this aircraft as she had been on a visit to Ukraine.

Construction of the airport began in November last year and it will be operated by a French company..

In addition to Wizz Air in Kutaisi in the first stage, flights will be carried out by Belarusian BelAvia and Russian Siberia in the direction of Minsk and Moscow, respectively.
