EU spokeswoman: EU-Georgia relationship at stake in parliamentary elections

Parliamentary elections being held in Georgia will determine how the country's relationship with the European Union is to proceed, a spokeswoman for the bloc's top diplomat Catherine Ashton said Monday, DPA reported.

"We have made very clear that the expectations for these elections are extremely high," said Maja Kocijancic, spokeswoman for EU foreign policy chief . "They will determine the pace and the intensity of our relations with Georgia."

She said a preliminary report from international election observers is expected on Tuesday and will help shape the EU's reaction to the "quite crucial" poll.

Parliamentary elections are being held in Georgia. Around 14 parties and two political blocs are taking part in the elections. Parliament will receive more authority in 2013 after amendments to the Constitution take force resulting in the president's power being reduced. The elections will be declared valid if the number of voters reaches one-third.
