Batumi ship owners protest at high rates for berthing at port

Georgia, Tbilisi, Oct. 24 / Trend corr. N.Kirtskhalia /

Ship owners are dissatisfied with the high tariffs at Batumi port and lack of berths. According to the Georgian TV-25 channel, the owners claim that the only place where they can moor their vessels is in Navsakudeli, and they are experiencing problems with high tariffs. They make up 0.5 lari for each metre which makes up to 700-800 lari ($1=1.66 lari) per month.

Winter is a particularly difficult period for ship owners when due to bad weather they cannot put to sea and have to pay for berthing. According to them, in addition, the sea routes are blocked during the presidential voyages, so they cannot get to the fishing grounds.

For its part, the management of Navsakudeli does not agree with their opinion on high prices and stated that they were established after consultation with the ship owners. As for the possibility of reducing them, the issues have to be agreed with the heads of the companies.

The Adzhar Ministry of Finance and Economy did not make any comment on this issue.
