Georgian former interior minister considers himself as a political prisoner

Georgia, Tbilisi, Nov. 8 / Trend N.Kirtskhalia /

The former Minister of Defence and subsequently Interior Minister Bacho Akhalaia said that the events noted in the testimony of witnesses have not occurred. The former minister's lawyer David Dekanoidze said in a Subjective Opinion programme that Akhalaia considers himself to be a political prisoner.

"There was no reason for Akhalaia to disappear and this is the reason for his detention. Akhalaia went from Tbilisi to Kutaisi, when he received a call from the prosecutor's office. So he turned the car around and went back to Tbilisi. Akhalaia said that he is not familiar with the people who accuse him of abuse and the incident has never occurred. If you noticed, these people say they had signed a letter of resignation from work, but do not remember why and what they have signed. To which extent is this convincing? " the lawyer asked.

According to him, Akhalaia stated that when he returned to Georgia, he was expecting that such action might be taken against him.

Dekanoidze also noted that the defence will possibly demand the bail of Akhalaia, the Chief of Joint Staff of the Georgian military forces Giorgi Kalandadze and commander of the 4th Battalion of the Georgian armed forces Zurab Shamatava who were also detained on this case,
Today, charges have to be brought against the three detainees.
