Georgia, Tbilisi, Dec. 14 / Trend N. Kirtzkhalia /

The supervisory board of Georgian Public Broadcasting has granted director general Giorgi Chanturia's request to resign.

The Council has appointed Giorgi Baratashvili, who is a deputy director of the Georgian Public Broadcasting, as acting director general.

Chanturia has headed the Georgian Public Broadcasting since 2009. He is a Knight of the Order of Honour. A director general is elected by the board for a period of six years.

His resignation was preceded by Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili's displeasure who repeatedly and publicly criticised Chanturia.

The activity of the Georgian Public Broadcasting was checked by the financial police. The reason given was that the Georgian Public Broadcasting wrote off 3.8 million lari ($1=1.66 lari), accumulated in the form of tax arrears, in 2011.

The Council should announce a contest and appoint a new candidate for the post within one month after director general's resignation.
