Russian Foreign Ministry: Moscow is not discussing with Georgia its return to the CIS

Georgia's return to the CIS is not in the agenda for talks with the country, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Alexander Lukashevich said, RIA Novosti reported.

"As for the sensational story that was made up by journalists themselves by recasting the statement of our Director of the First Department of the CIS, Mr. Yevdokimov, I want to confirm that the agenda of relations with Tbilisi doesn't include Georgia's return to the CIS," Lukashevich said at a briefing on Thursday.

According to him, "a statement made by Mr. Yevdokimov in Minsk on January 29 was misunderstood and wrongly interpreted by journalists."

On January 29, talking to reporters in Minsk prior to the start of ministerial consultations at the CIS Executive Committee, Director of the First Department of the CIS under the Foreign Ministry of Russia, Mikhail Yevdokimov said that initial talks with representatives of Georgia have started, and if it would express willingness to return to the CIS, a decision would be considered by a consensus of all CIS member states.
