The German and Georgian new governments want to establish the same partnership and strategic relations as with the U.S., Georgian Defense Minister Irakli Alasania said while opening the second Georgian-German strategic forum today.

"Georgia and Germany have strategic relations," he said. "It would be unfair not to acknowledge Georgian ex-president Eduard Shevardnadze's contributions to these relations. The new government follows the foreign policy pursued by the former government of the country and we are considering the Georgian-German relations as one of the most strategic relations. Our servicemen are fighting side by side in Afghanistan and trust each other."

He stressed that earlier, there was even an excessive expectation of support from Germany.
There is a chance to open a new sphere in these relations for Germany to take the patronage of Georgia's Euro-Atlantic aspirations.

"It will be very good," minister said. "We want to establish special relations with Germany, including the defense field. We want these relations to be as strategic and specific, as with the U.S."

The Georgian-German strategic forum is supported by the Konrad Adenaer Foundation and the Atlantic Council of Georgia. Its goal is to create a semi-formal platform for the government sector and non-governmental institutions working on issues of foreign and security policy, European integration and bilateral relations in the form of a regular dialogue.

The recommendations on foreign policy and security will be worked out within the forum.
