NSC Secretary: Georgian government destroys opponents

Georgia, Tbilisi, May 22 / Trend N.Kirtskhalia /

Secretary of the National Security Council of Georgia Giga Bokeria believes that the detention of the Secretary General of the National Movement Party Vano Merabishvili and the Governor of Kakheti region Zurab Tchiaberashvili is a result of the new authorities' obsession.

"Instead of focusing on punishing criminals, preventing chaos of the infamous violence we have recently witnessed, economic development and overcoming unemployment, the main task of the government is the annihilation of its political opponents and arrests of opposition leaders," Bokeria said Wednesday, noting that this is a very dangerous trend for Georgia.

He expressed his confidence that Georgian society will not allow the implementation of these goals outlined by the government.

On the night of May 22 (date cannot be correct), the General Prosecutor's Office of Georgia brought a charge against former Prime Minister and General Secretary of Mikheil Saakashvili's United National Movement Party (UNM) Vano Merabishvili and the governor of Kakheti, former Minister of Health Zurab Tchiaberashvili.

The charges were filed several hours after the detention of Merabishvili and Tchiaberashvili. The former government members and close associates of the President of Georgia are accused of corrupt practices, abuse of power and embezzlement of public funds. The investigation is being conducted under Article 164 (bribery of voters), Article 182, part 3 (embezzlement or misappropriation of funds by using the official position which entailed serious damage) and Article 332 (abuse of power) of the Criminal Code of Georgia.
