Sentence on case of Georgian ex-Defense Minister to be pronounced on Monday

Tbilisi city court finished hearings on the case of former Defense Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs of Georgia Bachana Akhalaia on an episode of verbal and physical insults against servicemen in October 2011.

On Saturday, the prosecution and defense made final speeches. Akhalia and other persons accused on this case also made their final speeches. Bachana Akhalaia is being charged under two articles of Criminal Code of Georgia - abuse of power and illegal imprisonment.

According to the investigation, in 2011, Bachana Akhlaia, when he was holding the post of the defense minister, verbally and physically insulted six servicemen and hit one servicemen with the knife handle in head in his cabinet, in the presence of the chief of Joint Staff of Georgian Armed Forces Giorgi Kalandadze and former commander of the 4th brigade of the Defense Ministry Zurab Shamatava.

After this the servicemen were transferred to Vaziani base, where the 4th brigade of Georgian Defense Ministry was based. There they were also subjected to verbal and physical insults at the parade ground.

The case also includes the chief of Joint Staff of Georgian Armed Forces Giorgi Kalandadze and former commander of the 4th brigade of the Defense Ministry Zurab Shamatava.

The judge will pronounce sentence on July 29.
