The gas production and sale process started in Mtsare Khevi field in the Sagarejo district (Kakheti, eastern Georgia) on June 20.

The project is being implemented by U.S company Frontera, the Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation told Trend.

U.S. Ambassador to Georgia Richard Norland attended a ceremony of launching production together with representatives of the company.

The implementation of the project in Mtsare Khevi field began in 2011.

"This is a historic event," executive director of the company Steven Nicandros said at the ceremony. "We have been working in Georgia since 1997, mainly conducting research in the field of oil and gas. We found a field with 42 billion cubic meters of natural gas. In the future it will guarantee the energy independence of Georgia."

U.S. Ambassador Richard Norland stressed the importance of the project. The diplomat called this day important for the Georgian-U.S economic relations.
