Georgia enjoys record grape harvest in 2018

Over 230,000 tonnes of grape have been processed during the grape harvest of 2018 and the income of 22,000 grape growers exceeded over 300 million GEL, announces Agriculture Minister of Georgia Levan Davitashvili, who says this result is a record high, Agenda reports.

Such an amount of harvested grapes has not been processed in Georgia since independence. Georgian wine export is also at a record high. We expect to export 100 million bottles of Georgia wine in 2018”, said Davitashvili.

About 280 private companies were involved in this year’s harvest.

In 2013-2018 grape growers living in Kakheti and Racha-Lechkhumi region got an income of 950 million GEL during the harvest period. Thanks to the positive development in this field the 2018 grape harvest was not subsidised,” Davitashvili saidi.

Davitashvili highlighted some major developments in the wine sector and said that wine exports are growing, export markets diversified, new wine companies and enterprises were created.

Davitashvili said that as of today there are more than 800 small, medium-size and large enterprises registered at the Georgian National Wine Agency, while their number in 2012 was 50.

The official rate of USD to GEL for Oct. 20 is 2.6972 per USD.
