Georgia has signed agreements on the construction of the Tbilisi-Sagarejo road section, which is a part of the main highway connecting Tbilisi and Kakheti, as well as the transit corridor connecting Georgia with the northwestern region of Azerbaijan, Trend reports via the Roads Department of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia.
According to the department, the construction of a new road will significantly increase traffic safety and significantly reduce travel time.
A four-lane asphalt concrete road with a length of 31.5 kilometers will be built on the Tbilisi-Sagarejo section. The construction of the highway will be financed from the state budget. The road design work was carried out by highly qualified Australian and American companies with the financial support of the World Bank.
Construction work on this section of the road will be carried out by two companies that won the tender (for different lots). It is expected to complete the work in 2-2.5 years.
According to the Department of Highways, the project will support the development of agriculture and tourism in the Kakheti region and increase the competitiveness of transit corridors through Georgia.
