(RIA Novosti) - Military observers from peacekeeping forces in the zone of the conflict between Georgia and breakaway South Ossetia have reported illegal flights by eight Georgian combat aircraft, an assistant commander said Wednesday.

The reports came after Georgia launched a police operation Tuesday night to disarm what they called criminal gangs in a gorge on the de facto border with another self-proclaimed republic on in its territory, Abkhazia, reports Trend.

"Today, at 4:20, 4:45 and 5:10 a.m. [Moscow time] the Eredvi observation post registered overflights by eight Georgian military aircraft," Vladimir Ivanov said. "The aircraft were flying from the southeast to the northwest at an altitude of 5,000 meters (16,400 feet)."

He added that this was yet another gross provocation that was not conducive to normalizing the situation in the zone of the Georgian-South Ossetian conflict.
