(civil) - The United Nations Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG) expressed deep concern regarding the attack on a Georgian checkpoint in Ganmukhuri village in the Abkhaz conflict zone, which left one policeman dead and another injured on January 5.
"UNOMIG stresses once again that the perpetrators of these attacks must be apprehended and brought to justice," a statement issued by the UNOMIG on January 7 reads.
This is the third violent incident, following the killings that occurred on 25 and 26 December in the Gali district, which undermines security in the zone of conflict, the statement says.
Two influential Abkhaz warlords were killed in separate attacks in late December in the Gali district of breakaway Abkhazia, reports Trend.
The Mission called on both sides to cooperate to prevent any escalation of violence and expressed readiness to assist in this regard.
Aware of the volatility of the security environment, UNOMIG has increased the number and frequency of its patrols in the affected areas of the zone of conflict. It also aims at making a contribution to clarifying the circumstances of the incidents in cooperation with the sides. The Mission is determined to continue to do everything within its power to prop up stability in the region and assist the communities concerned, the statement reads.
