Yemeni newspaper guard killed in clashes with police: report

Clashes erupted Tuesday between Yemeni security forces and guards of a banned southern newspaper, leaving one guard killed and two others injured, local News Yemen website reported.
The shooting came one day after an exchange of fire between Yemeni security officers and militants during a sit-in in support of al-Ayaam newspaper before the paper's headquarters in Crater district in the southern Yemeni city of Aden, Xinhua reported.
Al-Ayaam, a major newspaper in the south, was one of eight newspapers closed by the government last year over inciting separatism in the region.
Following Monday's incident, Yemeni security officers besieged the building where dozens of protestors and guards holed up.
The confrontations now stopped thanks to mediation efforts, News Yemen said.
Tamam Barshaheel, brother of the chief editor Hesham Barshaheel, was quoted by the Yemeni portal as saying 12 people were handed over to the security agencies, including Hesham's son and the two injured guards.
Sources told the website that Ali Monser, secretary of Yemeni Socialist Party, was also among the 12 people.
