Gaza aid convoy leader Galloway leaves Egypt, told not to return

Egypt told the leader of the Viva Palestina international aid convoy to the Gaza Strip, British parliamentarian George Galloway, that he is not welcome to come back, Egypt's foreign ministry said Friday, DPA reported.

Deputy Foreign Minister Hazem Ramadan told Galloway before he left for London that he would not be permitted to return to Egypt because of the trouble he caused was a threat to the security of Egyptians.

The ministry said in a statement that Galloway will not be allowed to enter Egypt in the future.

The Viva Palestina group said on its website that Galloway was forced to leave Cairo "when Egyptian plain-clothes police officers bundled him onto a London plane".

A source at Cairo airport denied the reports saying that Galloway had willingly left the country and was not deported.

He also said the security accompanying Galloway was only to protect him from "some Egyptians who were angered by the problems caused by the activist in al-Arish".

On Wednesday night, Galloway finally entered the Gaza Strip with humanitarian aid amid tight security, ending a long stand-off that culminated in clashes at the border.

Palestinians on the Gaza side of the border clashed with Egyptian border guards on Wednesday when Hamas loyalists threw rocks at Egyptian troops and attempted to scale the border fence in a protest against the 3-year-old blockade.

An Egyptian border guard was fatally shot and 10 Palestinians were injured after gunfire erupted on both sides of the border, Egyptian police and Palestinian doctors said.
