Lebanese MP denies Hezbollah planting explosives in South Lebanon

Lebanese MP Qassem Hashem denied on Friday that the explosives found in South Lebanon town of Khiam were planted by Hezbollah fighters, the state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported.
Israel said Thursday that 300 kilograms of buried explosives, recently discovered by UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in Khiam, were likely planted by the Shiite armed group, Xinhua reported.
But Hashem said in the South Lebanon city of Marjayoun near the borders with Israel, that "the source of these explosives is unknown, neither its purpose".
Hashem stressed that "Israeli threats to Lebanon are part of a scenario that the enemy is using in order to overcome its defeat in the 2006 war", referring to the 34-day war between Hezbollah and Israel.
"Keeping the resistance arms is the best way to protect Lebanese sovereignty against Israeli aggression," he added.
The UN Resolution 1701 which ended the 2006 war demands that Hezbollah be disarmed. But Lebanese cabinet's policy statement said that Hezbollah can keep their arms to resist Israel.
The Shiite group backed by Iran and Syria, is the only Lebanese faction which has kept its heavy arms. They have vowed to keep their arms as long as Israel poses a threat in the region.
