Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Saturday reaffirmed Damascus's support for ending internal Palestinian rifts, saying that his country is keen to help achieve Palestinian reconciliation, the official SANA news agency reported.
Al-Assad made the remarks during his meeting with Khaled Meshaal,  exiled Hamas politburo chief, and other Hamas politburo members in Damascus.
The Syria president said reconciliation, mainly between Fatah faction and Hamas, is the only way for the Palestinians to restore their rights and to overcome the challenges facing the Palestinian cause, Xinhua reported.
The two sides discussed the latest developments on the Palestinian arena, the life of the Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip, and efforts to lift the Israeli blockade, according to the report.
The Hamas chief, who live in exile in Damascus, expressed  appreciation for Syria's role in helping the Palestinian people end the siege.
Palestinian sources have indicated that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas will talk with Meshaal in a meeting sponsored by Syrian President al-Assad.
However, a senior official from Abbas' secular Fatah party said Saturday that Abbas will not meet his exiled Hamas rival during his planned visit to Damascus.
