Survey: 64 per cent of Iraqis want to vote in parliamentary poll

A survey by the pro-government daily al-Sabah newspaper showed Monday that 64 per cent of Iraqis want to vote in parliamentary elections set for March 7.

Around 25 per cent of the survey's 13,500 respondents could not say whether they would vote or not, while 11 per cent refused to take part in the election, DPA reported.

According to the report, the results of the poll reveals a growing political awareness among Iraqis.

The names of the candidates excluded from the election by the Independent High Electoral Commission are to be published Tuesday, al-Sabah said.

Last week, the commission said around 500 candidates would be barred from the poll because of their loyalty to the banned Baath party or for giving false information.
