One French UN peacekeeper was killed and two others were injured in a road accident in southern Lebanon on Saturday, Lebanese police and UN spokesman said, DPA reported.

"A UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) peacekeeper died and two other soldiers were injured in a traffic accident involving an armoured personnel carrier on a routine patrol this morning," UNIFIL spokesman Naresh Bhatt said.

The accident, according to Lebanese police, took place in Qalaway, east of the southern port city of Tyre.

The police said the UN peacekeepers vehicle turned off the road and that no other vehicle was involved.

The injured were immediately transferred to a nearby hospital. All were listed in "stable condition," the UN spokesman said.

UNIFIL has some 13,000 troops from various countries positioned in southern Lebanon. It is mainly tasked with monitoring the situation at the Lebanese-Israeli border and preventing an armed presence in areas near the border line.

Eleven French UNIFIL soldiers were wounded last month when a rocket accidentally exploded inside their camp during a routine military exercise.
