Saudi king to visit Jordan: Royal court spokesman

King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia will visit Jordan "at the end of this week" in the course of an Arab tour, a spokesman for the Jordanian royal court told German Press Agency dpa on Monday.

He declined to mention a specific date, saying the time of the visit will become clear in the coming 48 hours.

The Saudi leader is expected to have talks with Jordan's King Abdullah II on current Middle East issues, foremost the feasibility of shifting from the ongoing US-brokered proximity talks between the Palestinians and Israel to direct negotiations, diplomatic sources said.

US President Barack Obama is reportedly pressing Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and other moderate Arab leaders to move to the direct talks.

Abbas so far stipulated that shifting to direct negotiations should be preceded by the accomplishment of adequate progress in the indirect talks.

Previous reports in the Arab media had not mentioned Jordan as being on the Saudi monarch's upcoming itinerary, listing only Egypt, Syria and Lebanon on a trip starting Wednesday.
