Saudi king arrives in Jordan at the end of regional tour

King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia arrived in the Jordanian capital Amman on Friday, on the fourth and final stop of a regional tour, dpa reported.

He was given a red-carpet welcome led by Jordan's King Abdullah II, Prime Minister Samir Rifai, members of the ruling family and senior Jordanian officials.

The two pro-West monarchs are expected to hold talks on the latest Middle East developments, including the prospects of shifting to direct talks between the Palestinians and Israel.

Arab foreign ministers, who met in Cairo on Thursday, recommended such a transition to direct negotiations, but left it up to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to make the decision at the appropriate time.

The showdown between Western powers and Tehran over the Iranian uranium enrichment programme is also expected to be high on the agenda in Amman, along with the deadlock in Iraq over the formation of a new government, Arab diplomats said.

The Saudi leader flew in from the Lebanese capital Beirut, where he had accompanied Syrian President Bashar al-Assad from Damascus - his second stop - to a tripartite summit with Lebanese President Michel Suleiman over mounting political tensions in his country.
