Syria: Hariri tribunal not after truth

Syria warns that the United Nations tribunal probing the assassination of slain Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri pursues a hidden agenda, Press TV reported.

"The international tribunal is not seeking to reveal the truth (about the murder) but to achieve political goals" Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem said on Monday.

Rafiq Hariri, the father of current Premier Saad Hariri, was assassinated in Beirut on February 14, 2005, in a massive car bombing which also killed 22 other people.

The Special Tribunal for Lebanon was set up by the UN and the Lebanese government in May 2007 to prosecute the perpetrators.

"The international tribunal is a Lebanese matter and we will not deal with this court," Muallem also noted.

The leader of Lebanon's Hezbollah movement, Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah, also warned late last month that the court had led Beirut to a "sensitive place," saying it was aimed at inciting division in the country.

"I was personally informed by Prime Minister Hariri...that the tribunal will accuse some undisciplined [Hezbollah] members," Nasrallah said.

He rejected any involvement by the movement and called the accusations part of "a dangerous project that is targeting the resistance."
