Israeli tank shelling into the southern Gaza Strip left one militant dead and two wounded early Wednesday in an area east of Khan Younis, hospital officials and security sources said, dpa reported.

The sources said that an Israeli tank fired two shells at a group of militants east of the village of Abbasan, east of the city, as they were trying to fire a homemade rocket at Israel.

The militants were from Homat al-Aqsa, a military wing of the Fatah movement, the sources said.

Medics identified the fatality as Sharif Bedeir. The two wounded militants were admitted in serious condition to the European Hospital east of Khan Younis.

Early this week, the Israeli military struck several targets belong to the Hamas movement, which rules the Gaza Strip, in response to homemade rockets fired toward southern Israel. One militant was killed and 10 wounded in those strikes.
