Hezbollah chief Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah on Monday openly accused Israel of killing former Lebanese premier Rafik Hariri in 2005, dpa reported.

"Israel has the capacity to carry out an operation that targets Rafik Hariri," Nasrallah said in a press conference via a video link.

"Lebanon is the best place for Israel to carry out its operations, due to its geographical location," he added.

The accusation, first made last week, comes amid renewed tension in Lebanon over the murder as the UN Special Tribunal for Lebanon appeared set to accuse Hezbollah members in the assassination.

Hariri was killed in a massive bomb blast in Beirut. His followers have accused Syria of plotting the murder with its allies in Lebanon, but Syria has always denied any involvement.

During the press conference, Hezbollah's al-Manar television showed pictures of various people that the movement claimed were "Israeli spies" captured by the Lebanese authorities in 2010.

Nasrallah said the alleged spies were monitoring the movements of various Lebanese leaders from various political factions.
