Yemeni security forces have killed five al-Qaeda members in the restive coastal province of Abyan after a spate of attacks on security personnel in south Yemen, Press TV reported.

Yemen's 26sep.net news agency reported on Saturday that the gunmen were killed in Lowdar city of Abyan, where al-Qaeda terrorists killed eleven soldiers and set ablaze their military vehicle on Friday.

Three other militants were injured during the clashes on Saturday and later captured and are currently being interrogated by the police, a source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the news agency.

On Saturday, Yemeni security forces launched a nationwide crackdown on militants linked to the al-Qaeda terrorist network, the source added.

In a separate development, al-Qaeda militant and former Guantanamo detainee Ali Hussein al-Tays surrendered himself to the authorities in Yemen on Saturday.

The Yemeni government is struggling to deal with the al-Qaeda presence in the south. Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the Yemeni branch of al-Qaeda, has been implicated in several terrorism plots in the United States, including a failed Christmas Day 2009 attack on a Detroit-bound airliner.
