Jordan's King Abdullah II met Sunday with the Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak, who paid a surprise brief visit to Amman ahead of next week's direct talks between Palestinians and Israel in Washington, dpa reported.

"The discussions focused on means of ensuring the success of the direct talks between the Palestinians and Israel" due to be re-launched in Washington on Thursday," a royal court statement said.

King Abdullah will be attending US President Barack Obama's six- way meeting in Washington on Wednesday for re-launching the Palestinian-Israeli talks on Thursday.

In addition to Obama and Abdullah, the meeting will be attended by Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the representative of the Middle East quartet Tony Blair.
