Government allied militiaman killed in Iraq
A militant allied with the Iraqi government was killed in a drive-by shooting in the north of the country, a police source said Friday, DPA reported.
A member of the Sahwa, or Awakening Councils, was shot dead while staffing a checkpoint outside Kirkuk, located 250 kilometres north of the capital Baghdad.
The gunmen drove past the checkpoint late Thursday, fired shots from a moving vehicle, and then fled the scene, a police official said.
The Sahwa, made up of former Sunni insurgents, have been facing regular attacks for their role in supporting the government in its fight against al-Qaeda.
