Egypt and Iran agreed on Sunday to resume direct flights between the two countries' capital cities for the first time in 30 years, Egypt's civil aviation authority announced, dpa reported.
The agreement calls for 28 direct flights between Tehran and Cairo a week, 14 by airlines based in each country. It does not specify when flights will resume.
It was signed by the head of Egypt's Civil Aviation Authority Sameh Hefni and Hamid Ghavabesh, deputy chief of the Iranian National Aviation Company.
"This accord will replace the one signed by both countries in 1976 and is in line with the developments in air transport," Hefni said in a press statement.
Relations between Iran and Egypt have been tense since 1979, when Egypt gave refuge to Iran's Shah after he was ousted by the Islamic Revolution.
Diplomatic representation between the two countries are limited.
