Arab League to debate troubled peace talks

The Arab League was Friday to debate its continued support for direct peace talks between the Palestinians and Israel, amid renewed construction in Jewish settlements in the West Bank, DPA reported.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who is to participate in the meeting in the Libyan coastal town of Sirte, has said negotiations would amount to a "waste of time" if Israel builds more homes in the occupied territory.

Abbas is seeking the backing of the Arab League should he decide to pull out of the talks.

Arab League chief Amr Moussa recently said construction in existing settlements while talks were under way were a "waste of Arab interests."

His organisation had backed the latest round of direct Israel- Palestinian talks, launched in Washington in early September, but warned that the issue of settlement construction could lead to a breakdown in the negotiations.

The United States has been pushing the sides to remain at the negotiating table despite their differences, offering incentives to both Israel and the Palestinians which so far have been rejected.
