Iraq's premier arrives in Tehran

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki arrived in Tehran Monday for a day of talks with Iranian officials on regional and international issues, Fars news agency reported.

Al-Maliki was scheduled to meet President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and discuss the situation in Iraq after the general election in March, and his bid against the Sunni-backed bloc of former prime minister Iyad Allawi for a second term in office, DPA reported.

Shiite Iran favours Al-Maliki's Shiite alliance, but has showed itself open for any Iraqi government which could return peace and stability to Iraq.

Other issues to be discussed are border security and facilities for Iranian pilgrims for visiting Shiite shrines in southern Iraq.
