UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon strongly condemned Tuesday's attack on a convoy carrying his special representative for Iraq and other UN personnel, dpa reported.

A member of the Iraqi security detail on the convoy was killed and several others were injured. Special envoy Ad Melkert, his deputy Jerzy Skuratowicz and staff from the UN mission in Iraq were unhurt in the attack in Najaf.

"The secretary general sends his condolences to the family of the deceased and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured," said UN spokesman Farhan Haq in New York.

"The secretary general wishes to express his appreciation to his special representative and the staff of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), who are working under difficult circumstances to implement the mandate of the United Nations in Iraq," Haq said. "This attack will not deter the UN from continuing its efforts to assist the Iraqi people on their path to reconciliation and prosperity."
