Berlin express horror at Baghdad church deaths

Germany called on Monday for greater protection of Iraq's Christian minority, following at least 52 deaths in a Baghdad church after militants seized dozens of worshippers, DPA reported.

Government spokesman Steffen Seibert told reporters that Berlin was both "horrified and saddened" of the incident, which he said underlined the dangers facing Christians in Iraq.

At least 52 people were killed and 70 injured after Iraqi forces stormed the Our Lady of Salvation church where militants were holding about 100 people.

It is crucial that the government in Iraq take steps to protect minorities, Seibert said.
