Egypt slams Israeli settlement expansion in Jerusalem
Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit said Saturday that Israeli plans to build hundreds of new Jewish housing units in East Jerusalem was undermining the peace process, dpa reported.
"The Israeli plan is very clear. Israel is seeking to keep all of Jerusalem off the negotiating table," he said in a statement.
The latest move by Israel, which earlier this week said it plans to build 625 new housing units in East Jerusalem, was "making a two- state solution impossible."
"East Jerusalem is not the capital of Israel," said Aboul Gheit, rejecting Israeli claims.
"East Jerusalem is the capital of an independent Palestinian state, which will emerge sooner or later," he added.
