Tunisia's new unity government said Monday that 78 people had died in the month of demonstrations that toppled autocratic president Zine el-Abidine ben Ali last week, dpa reported.

The figure is the first credible official figure since the unrest began in mid-December.

Interior minister Ahmed Friaa told a press conference that a further 94 people were injured in the demonstrations, which were brutally repressed by police firing live ammunition.

Friaa, who was reappointed to his post Monday, also spoke of an undetermined number of dead among the security forces and of economic losses of 1.6 billion euros.

The riots caused widespread damage to property and dealt a severe setback to the country's important tourist business.
