Jordan's King Abdullah II in a meeting with French Foreign Minister Michele Alliot-Marie Sunday stressed the important role of the European Union in efforts to achieve a resumption of direct talks between the Palestinians and Israel, dpa reported.

"The monarch underlined the importance of the role of France and other EU countries in spurring the deadlocked peace negotiations in the run-up for the achievement of the two-state solution," a statement from Jordan's royal court said.

Abdullah also stressed the need for "immediate steps" from the international community in this regard.

Alliot-Marie arrived in Amman late Saturday, on the last leg of a Middle East tour that also took her to Israel, the Palestinian territories and Egypt.

She briefed Abdullah on the outcome of her talks with Middle East leaders and France's latest efforts to spur the stalled Palestinian- Israeli negotiations.

"France is determined to do whatever is possible to bring the Palestinians and the Israelis back to the negotiating table. We are working with all parties involved in the peace process to overcome all obstacles in the way of the peace talks," Alliot-Marie told a joint press conference with her Jordanian counterpart Nasser Judeh.
