Israeli forces have attacked the funeral ceremony of a Palestinian teenager shot dead by Israeli settlers in the West Bank city of al-Khalil (Hebron).

Israeli soldiers fired tear gas, sound grenades, and rubber-coated bullets on Saturday to disperse thousands of mourners attending the funeral of Yusef Ikhlil, the Ma'an news agency reported.

The 17-year-old youth died on Friday shortly after he sustained a head injury when he was targeted by Israelis from an illegal settlement north of the city.

Israeli forces attacked the funeral ceremony after enraged Palestinian mourners threw stones at a military watchtower, according to Palestinian Solidarity Project spokesman Mohammad Awad.

Awad said nearly 50 mourners were injured by Israeli forces, adding that the troops also arrested two Palestinian locals, PressTV reported.

Al-Khalil Governor Kamil Hamid and the heads of Palestinian Authority security departments attended the funeral ceremony while shops in the town of Beit Ummar, northeast of al-Khalil, closed to mourn Ikhlil's death.

Ikhlil was the second teenager to be killed by settlers in the West Bank over the course of two days.

On Thursday, Udai Maher Qadous, 19, was shot and killed while working on his land near the northern West Bank city of Nablus.

In related news, the Palestinian Authority's envoy to the UN wrote a letter to the Security Council on Friday, calling for "urgent attention and serious action" to check mounting settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank.
