Australia's Rudd backs no-fly zone over Libya

Arab World Materials 28 February 2011 15:11 (UTC +04:00)

Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd on Monday called for the United Nations Security Council to impose a no-fly zone over Libya to help prevent civilian casualties, DPA reported.

The UN Security Council must also "keep all other options on the table," he said.

"A desperate regime is using brutal forms of violence against civilians as a crude tool for survival," said Rudd, calling on Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi to step down.

"For the sake of humanity, go now," he said.

His speech included references to the massacres in Rwanda and the former Yugoslavia.

The Arab world's call for democracy "grows louder and louder by the day," Rudd told the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
